But [1998]

Fortunately, I fell into the orifice
between the wispy lovers of lifelike statues and
the guttural grunts of sour stomachs.
Being neither of either,
I was viewed by all
as standing in a valley.
Being neither of either,
I was despised by all
as both despised.

Fortunately, I could breathe into it
between gasps of suffocation and
athletic feats of psychical exertion.
Being neither of either,
I was my own me
as servitude to a mirror.
Being neither of either,
I was loved by all
as both despised.

Fortunately, It's the middle of the day,
between the vaporous flatulence of vice and
serpentine decay of impenetrable grief.
Being neither of either,
I drowned in the fog
as the gray engulfed.
Being neither of either,
I was lost by all
as both despised.
